I first began serving the Vancouver Downtown Eastside community with a meal distributing organization, soon realizing that general help, despite being helpful, was increasingly available compared to tailored support. I started to search what specific forms of support can be provided.

Vitamin D. The nutrient that sparked me to this initiative. As I worked on my personal

research project, my interest in vitamin D as a potential neuroprotective modulator for the opioid dependent human brain kept growing because literature review kept pointing back to it as a nutrient that may benefit substance dependence. My gene network analysis identified potential mechanisms in which the nutrient may benefit people with opioid use disorder, though this did not mean vitamin D is a standalone solution.

It did, in fact, push me to think more deeply about how low-cost, accessible nutritional

support may connect to systems that are often under strain for people with substance use disorder. This initiative stems from that interest, with the goal of turning lessons research has offered me into practical support combined with direct service experience.
